History

According to legend, people from nearby villages used to burn wood coal in the dense forests of the wide valley of the stream Biela under the Belianske Tatras. One of the charcoal burners built a small wooden cottage in the middle of the forest. The only window of the cottage faced the side from which the light of the morning star shone into the room. Around the charcoal burner's cottage, other wooden cottages grew, and since their inhabitants were also enchanted by the bright star, they named their settlement "Zor" - Ždiar. However, Ždiar as a village was founded by František Lužinský, the castellan of the Horvátovci landlords, in 1590. The village belonged to the more stable settlements of the Valachian population. Its inhabitants were engaged in logging, herding, and charcoal burning. Allegedly, 13 families who divided the territory into 13 sections came to Ždiar. In the second wave of colonization, side valleys and adjacent mountains were parceled out. According to oral tradition, the first settlers settled in Bachledova dolina, and they were charcoal burners who fled from serfdom. In addition, new settlements were established on Antošovský vrch, in Pavlovska dolina, Blaščacka dolina, Bartušovska dolina, Monkova dolina, and on Slodičákový vrch.

1934

The original Ždiaranka guesthouse was built and operated by the Vitek family from Prague in 1932-1934.

1975

In the 70s, Ždiaranka was closed and subsequently demolished.

2007

It was not until 2006 and 2007 that the new Ždiaranka was built and opened by the Bachleda family from Ždiar.
